I am a lifelong Oaklander and I live on the same street I grew up on. Oakland has given me so much--my community, my sense of purpose, a wonderful OUSD education for my 3 children, a place for my wife to run her small business. In addition, Oakland has given me a career I love; I have been an Oakland firefighter for 27 years, as well as being an elected union leader for over a decade. I have served onmany neighborhood committees, including the Rockridge Community Planning Council, the Friends of the Rockridge Library, and in numerous PTA roles. I have been involved with Oakland City government in many ways, serving on the steering committees for public safety measures, infrastructure bonds, and small business tax relief measures. I also served on the oversight board for the local community college district, ensuring that public money went to ensuring student success, as voters intended, rather than evaporating into administrative black holes.

I am not under any illusions that fixing Oakland will be easy or quick, but, like so many of our neighbors, I love this town and will never give up on it.

I am running for office because I want my kids to be able to live in an Oakland that is safe, affordable, thriving, diverse, and fun. That doesn’t appear to be the trajectory we’re on right now. I want them to be able to afford to live here and I want them to WANT to live here. I am running for office not to launch a career in politics, but to complete a career in public service.
  • My top priorities are: 1) public safety that doesn't compromise our values; 2) getting the unhoused into transitional housing and streamlining the process for building dense, affordable, infill housing; 3) providing constituent services, listening to community needs, and working towards making Oakland a less chaotic, more functional place to live and do business.
  • Temperament is key in this job. For too long Oakland has been torn apart by petty political squabbling. If you look at my list of endorsers you'll see some politicians you like, some you don't, and a lot who don't like each other very much. But they all agree that I am someone who can cut through the nonsense, set aside the childishness, and work towards collaborative solutions, even with other elected with whom I frequently disagree. In addition to all of our statewide reps like Nancy Skinner, Buffy Wicks, and Mia Bonta, I've been endorsed by 14 current and former City Council members, as well as the Democratic Party, Planned Parenthood, the Sierra Club, the Alameda Labor Council, and dozens of elected officials and community groups.
  • I have the humility to know the things that I don't know, and the curiosity to seek out people more expert than myself. I don't promise to have all the answers on the first day, but I am excited to get to work with my new colleagues. I pledge to make myself a responsive, attentive council member, focussing on the needs of the community. Our diverse Oakland population has a depth and breadth of knowledge that benefits those who take the time to listen and ask questions.
Wildfire safety is both an area of expertise and a critical need for our community.

I am also passionate about the need to make Oakland a welcoming place for business, both small and large. I firmly believe that in Oakland, labor and business interests are partners, not foes, and that we work towards a common project of lifting up our City. We can't thrive as a city without a successful business infrastructure and we need to do everything we can to convince businesses from other cities to relocate here, help existing businesses expand, and encourage young Oaklanders to start new projects.
The key responsibility of the Oakland City Council is passing the budget. As Joe Biden is fond of saying: "Don't tell me what your values are; show me your budget and I'll tell YOU what your values are."

In addition, Oakland City Councilmembers must always remain responsive to their constituents.
Although it might not be the first memory, I have a distinct recollection of my mom showing up at school one day and pulling me out of class, something she would never normally do. She took me a political rally to see Geraldine Ferraro speak. My mom was incredibly proud of seeing the first female vice presidential candidate from a major ticket. I will never forget both her pride in the achievement, and also the promise of the American system and a faith in the American electorate. Although Ferraro and Mondale were badly beaten, this instilled in me a love of democracy and an understanding that the levers of power should be available to anybody in America. My mom died after Donald Trump has elected but before he took office; she so wished that she could see the first woman elected President. She would be cheering Kamala mightily and would be ecstatic to see a long-term dream of hers fulfilled on the same night that her son was also elected to office.
My first real job was as a firefighter and a paramedic and I am proud to have worked for Oakland for 27 years. In the interim I have held many side jobs, including guiding whitewater trips on America's most rugged rivers. I have also worked as a science and travel writer and have published two books and hundreds of articles.

Accountability is key. I will strive to further transparency whenever possible.
