Candidate Connection

Zachary Meador participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 10, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Zachary Meador's responses follow below.[3]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Keep youth in my state

2) Energy
3) Drug crisis[4][5]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Keeping young adults in my state. As a young person myself, many o my peers are leaving this state because they feel “unrepresented” or “unwanted”, and I’m running to show them they can stay in West Virginia and succeed.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[5]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Zachary Meador answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My parents. They are strong, intelligent and capable individuals who inspire me to do what I can.[5]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
-The ability to be talked with

-A genuine heart that cares for his/her people
-Ability to listen, but also lead[5]

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I talk with others, not at them. I have a true heart and passion for my state and community. I can listen to problems, suggestions, and ideas, but I can also lead and solve problems.[5]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Represent their district the bet they can, not just represent their party or themselves.[5]
What legacy would you like to leave?
An economically strong, well educated state on the road to prosperity.[5]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
Barack Obama's election. I was 8 at the time, and though I don't believe in his politics, I thought it was truly amazing how wonderful the free election system was and how we as Americans don't see race or religion, but that we see "American".[5]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Volunteer Firefighter. I currently do this and plan to whatever path I take career wise.[5]
What happened on your most awkward date?
I have never been on a date[5]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas, it celebrates the birth of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, as well as a good way to spend time with family.[5]
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Art of the Deal by Donald Trump[5]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Micheal Scott from The Office[5]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My instruments. I love music and making music, and my instruments are a wonderful outlet for me.[5]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Where Did You Sleep Last Night performed by Nirvana[5]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Losing my Grandmother[5]
(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
District size, really.[5]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No. The farmers of the constitution wrote it so that anyone could run for the office. It keeps the government pure when new people are elected.[5]
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
Our state is suffering under a drug crisis. It will definitely be hard to clean up.[5]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
A cooperative work relationship to pass and work with laws to help the state prosper.[5]
Do you believe it's beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes, it will help build trust and get your legislation passed.[5]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Gerrymandering[5]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Education, energy, veterans affairs, elderly affairs.[5]
If you are not currently a member of your party's leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
No, I plan to be a people's representative, not a party representative.[5]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
While many legislators have shaped my life, I plan to model myself after myself, and leave my own legacy.[5]
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
Definitely, one day I hope to run for the presidency.[5]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you've heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
A man was on the brink of suicide due to a lay off at a coal mine and a divorce from his wife, but turned himself around in the Lord and now he is back on his feet.[5]
