Zakyia’s career exemplifies her belief that ALL children deserve an excellent education, a conviction born from her own experiences in District 8, first as a student and later as a teacher-leader. In her 10+ year career in education, Zakyia has been a classroom teacher and teacher-leader, supported teacher training as a coach and data manager, and successfully advocated for education policy change or advised on the local, state and national level. Currently, Zakyia leverages her expertise in data analysis to coach school leaders on using data to drive decision-making and enhance student outcomes. Zakyia earned her bachelor's degree, Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Howard University, and further honed her expertise with a Master's degree and Certificate in Administration & Supervision from Johns Hopkins University School of Education. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys live music, dancing, and reading, particularly Sci-Fi and Afro-Futurism. Zakyia Goins-McCants is not just a candidate; she is a proven education leader ready to serve Prince George’s County through a community-driven, data-informed approach with a focus on excellence and equity.
  • Cultivating safe, positive learning environments & Increasing access to mental health supports: Through training in restorative practices for all staff and a designated restorative practices coordinator in every school, access to mental health professionals, either in school or through an approved referral list, training such as CPI, RAP or Mental Health First Aid for all staff and the revision of the Student Rights & Responsibilities Handbook with student, staff, family and community input
  • Bolstering student achievement: Using data to meet students where they are to improve their outcomes, Ensuring adequate funding to provide specialized support for students who are chronically performing below grade level and increasing communications and training for families and students to use district systems for monitoring student progress
  • Implementing strategies to retain and attract exceptional staff in all positions: Increasing base teacher pay, increasing support for conditionally certified teachers, implementing policies to promote a positive work environment, and implementing innovative approaches,such as the Opportunity Culture Model, to create more opportunities for teachers to extend their leadership
I’m passionate about education because I know the power it has to change the lives of individuals, families, and ultimately communities. I am passionate about the use of data and research to guide educational decision-making, equity & cultural responsiveness in policy, and engaging families & the broader community in the work of schools.
My natural curiosity and love for learning drive me to be meticulously informed. I am dedicated to thoroughly understanding the nuances of a problem or issue. I genuinely love people and that love is central to my approach to problem-solving, allowing me to connect with all stakeholders to genuinely understand their needs and concerns.

I am a fierce advocate for children, unwavering in my commitment to securing the high-quality education they deserve. While I am open to diverse viewpoints and believe in the importance of leveraging collective genius, my dedication to student welfare is non-negotiable. I approach every issue with a balanced perspective, advocating for policies that support educational excellence and equity.

I believe Prince George’s County has the potential to be a model for the nation, a place where ALL students can achieve their full potential. I am ready to bring my passion, expertise, and values to the Board, working tirelessly to make a positive, lasting impact on our community's educational system.
