Zurich, Switzerland, Prostitute Garage Referendum (2012)
The Zurich Prostitute Garage Referendum was on the ballot on March 11, 2012, in the city of Zurich in Switzerland.
The measure was approved with 52.6% of voters voting in favor. The Swiss People’s Party collected 2,000 valid signatures to get this issue on the ballot. The measure was designed to create garage-like boxes for sex workers to meet clients in.[1][2]
Michael Herzig, from Zurich’s social welfare department, said, "The big difference is that until now prostitution has been in the public space. Now we are going to change this, move it from the street to a private space in an old industrial area, which belongs to the city. This gives us the possibility to define the rules of prostitution in this area. "[3][4]
