Political career

Idaho Treasurer (1999-2019)

Crane first assumed office as Idaho treasurer on January 4, 1999, having won in the general election on November 3, 1998. He was re-elected four times since, in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014. He did not seek re-election in 2018, leaving office in January 2019.

Audit of Crane's office

In January 2012, it was first reported that Idaho Legislative Services auditors had been reviewing financial records from Crane's office to determine if any criminal offenses took place. Under state law, the audit is conducted at least every three years.[3] In a report released January 30, legislative auditors accused Crane of improperly documenting his office expenditures, particularly the use of transportation. Crane disagreed with the report but said that in the future he would record future expenditures through the state's accounting system.[4]
