Scottsdale Apartment Building Referendum (2008)
There was a petition drive for a Scottsdale Apartment Building Referendum to be on the November ballot in Maricopa County.
The Scottsdale city council approved the building of an apartment complex in downtown and a group of residents tried to overturn this decision with a petition to get the issue voted on by city residents. 1,961 signature were needed to be gathered by March 20, giving those petitioners a little over a month to collect them.[1]
There were allegations that petition gatherers were being harassed while trying to collect signatures outside public buildings. The chairman for the activist group heading the petition drive had to call police in to deal with issues a few times during the petition gathering process. The development group heading the construction had hired people to discourage the signing of the petition and they acknowledged that they might have been over zealous in their attempts but said that any overt harassment was false.[2]
This measure did not make it onto the ballot.[3]
