Campaign website
Carney's campaign website stated the following:
| “ |
01 — Empowerment I will empower Tennessee citizens with information, tools, and resources to succeed in creating the changes that The People actually want. 02 — Leadership Leaders are supposed to LEAD! Nobody forced your current leaders into the positions you elected them for. They volunteered for the role, and as such, should do the job you sent them to do. 03 — Accountability By reducing the amount of government spending, government control, and government overreach, I will hold my fellow statesmen to account; ensuring your God-given rights remain protected and that your voice matters in the maintenance of those rights. 04 — Communication I will blast open the channels of communication between the people and their elected officials. I believe that if your representatives don’t listen to you (The People) FIRE THEM! 05 — Economy I will get the government out of the business of business. I believe it is not the government’s job to tell small businesses how they should and shouldn’t operate during times of tumult and unpredictability. As governor, my team and I will use the power of our office to unleash the power of Tennessee’s unlimited economic potential. We will develop strong partnerships between the private and government sectors to create the largest jobs program in the state’s history. The goal is always to give power to small businesses and their customers to decide what’s best for them. 06 — Marijuana Laws As a former police officer, I’ve seen the effects of drugs on people’s lives. Because of this, I believe that marijuana should be legalized and the laws should reflect our current alcohol laws. However, it doesn’t matter what my personal beliefs are. This is a People’s issue, so I also believe The People should return to the days of taking an active role in voicing their opinions at the ballot box. We must let the people decide. Put it up for a vote. Put it on the referendum. 07 — Criminal Justice Reform No matter who you are, what your socioeconomic status is, or what Tennessee county you live in, if you’ve ever found yourself caught up in the criminal justice system, you’ll find it to be entirely uncertain, unkind, and unfair. Too many innocent people accept charges they should have never been charged with in the first place. They are strong-armed into taking a guilty plea out of fear of harsher punishment. There is a huge disconnect between the crimes committed and the punishments for those crimes. It’s time we stop doling out $200 punishments for $20 crimes. It’s time we stop treating criminals differently based on who they know or how much money they have. 08 — Taxation I will continue to affirm our commitment to never imposing a state income tax as it has been outlawed in the state constitution. 09 — Education To pay educators a fair salary for the vitally important job they do and liberate them from the curse of teaching to a test. It is clear that our students are not retaining information by this method of teaching. Our students deserve better. Additionally, the cost of textbooks and tuition for post-secondary education has gotten completely out of control. I want to free up more money from the TN lottery to directly fund these costs and more. 10 — Size of Government I’m committed to keeping state government living within its means; keeping it as small and efficient as possible. 11 — Election Reform/Integrity My team and I are committed to working with the Secretary of State’s office to ensure that Tennessee will always have free and fair elections. Any complaint of voter malfeasance will be completely, fully, and rigorously investigated to the fullest extent of the law. 12 — Covid-19 While I recognize how dangerous and seriously we should treat the COVID-19 virus, we can all agree that misleading information and lies about Covid have been used to manipulate or control our citizens’ lives. The initial precautions taken may have been necessary, but no one doubts it was an opportunity for gross overreach by the government. I believe it is the state’s job to empower The People; not enslave them under the guise of “protecting” them. 13 — Abortion While I believe that life begins at conception, the state of Tennessee has already passed numerous laws regulating how abortions can be legally performed. The US Supreme Court has weighed in on this issue via Roe v. Wade. As governor, I will do everything in my legal power to protect the rights of the unborn while at the same time not violating the current laws on the books. This issue will have to be decided by the Tennessee State General Assembly. I suggest you call your representatives. 13 — Corruption I fully support a whistle-blower act with immunity to allow those with information and evidence the ability to come forward without fear of ridicule or persecution. Individuals in power who are doing things against The People should fear those around them. When we commit crimes, we are punished to the fullest extent of the law; but their day in court never seems to happen. Those days are over.[2] |
