4th Circuit to hear cockfighting case
December 9, 2011
South Carolina: The United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit will hear an appeal of a ruling in a 2010 South Carolina cockfighting case. Six people were found guilty of violating federal animal fighting laws in Lexington County. Attorneys for the defendants claim that the guilty verdicts should be overturned because there were no grounds to prosecute using the federal Animal Welfare Act in a South Carolina court.
Prosecution during the trial had sought to prove that the defendants took part in interstate commerce, which would give grounds for federal involvement.
The case will be heard in Virginia on January 24, 2012.[1]
