- Education: As a member of the school board in Ottawa, I know firsthand the struggles of local educators and school districts. I strongly believe that providing youth with a proper education from day one will result in adults who are more prepared to enter the workforce and find gainful employment, which lessens the cost to society in other areas. I consider myself a lifelong learner and education will be one of my highest priorities as a policymaker.
- Poverty and Social Assistance: Poverty is an epidemic in this country that is being improperly addressed. Current social assistance programs simply throw money at those in need and expect positive outcomes. This can help certain families who have simply temporarily run into tough times, but for families who have been stuck in the cycle of poverty for generations, this is insufficient.
- Economy: We are still rebounding from the Great Recession, and things are slowly but steadily improving. As the Millennial generation takes a more prominent role in American business, it’s important that we acknowledge the growing trend toward small business and entrepreneurship in the United States. I believe it’s vital that we allow Kansans every opportunity to be successful in these endeavors and allow these small businesses to grow and compete in the economy on a national scale.
- Healthcare: There is no doubt that healthcare is in bad shape in this country, and sadly, President Obama’s Affordable Care Act did not solve these important problems. I do believe some progress has been made in this area, including free contraception, the elimination of lifetime maximums, and eliminating the exclusion of those in need of healthcare due to preexisting conditions.
- Immigration: We’ve heard a lot of tough talk recently about building walls and mass deportations, but such efforts would be incredibly costly and ineffective. Polling shows that the majority of Americans support giving law-abiding, working illegal immigrants some sort of path to citizenship, and I agree.
