County Law Enforcement Sales Tax, Proposition A (November 2009)
The County Law Enforcement Sales Tax proposition was on the November 3 ballot in Clay County.
The proposition enacted an eighth of a percent tax on items purchased throughout the county for a period of 12 years. The money generated from the tax is used to support law enforcement personnel, maintain facilities and help with operational costs.[1] This tax essentially renewed a tax that was already in place but that would have expired in 2010. The tax had been used to help fund the county detention center and paid for staff, so renewal of this tax was seen as essential to the general safety of the county. There was no outspoken opposition to the tax, as most citizens believed in the need for continued law enforcement.[2]
