Georgia 9th Superior Court District Enotah Circuit

David E. Barrett was a judge of the Enotah Circuit of Georgia.[1] He was appointed to the court by Governor Zell Miller in 1992[2] and retired in March 2012.[3]

Judicial Qualifications investigation

In February 2012, the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission began investigating Judge Barrett over an incident during which he waved a gun in his own courtroom. While a witness was being interviewed during a hearing, he pulled out the gun and said that she "might as well shoot" her attorney, and that she was "killing her case." The District Attorney, who objected to the act by Judge Barrett, believed that it was meant to drive home a rhetorical point. Following the incident, Barrett was replaced on the court's calendar.[2]

Barrett retired from the court before a public hearing on the matter could begin, so as not to expose himself or family to public scrutiny. He said, "I'm not putting up with that for my family. It's called public service, not because you're getting rich."[3]

2010 election

Barrett competed against David Turk in his bid for re-election.[4] Barrett won with 73.7 percent of the vote.[5]
