This week's Federal Courts, Empty Benches: The Wednesday Vacancy Count includes nominations, confirmations and vacancies from January 29, 2014 to February 4, 2014. Nominations, confirmations and vacancies occurring on February 5th will be reflected in the February 12th report.
The vacancy warning level remained at yellow this week after one new vacancy and no new confirmations. The vacancy percentage rose to 11.1%. There were no new nominations this week, which allowed the total number of nominees waiting for confirmation to remain at 58. The number of vacancies of Article III judges rose to 96 out of 865. District of New Jersey
Dennis Cavanaugh
On January 31, 2014, Dennis Cavanaugh retired from the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. Cavanaugh first served the court as a federal magistrate judge. He was a magistrate judge from 1993 until his confirmation as a federal judge in 2000. Cavanaugh was nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1999 and was confirmed by the Senate in July of 2000. Cavanaugh served the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey for 21 years.
The retirement creates the only vacancy of the 17 posts on the United States District Court for the District of New York. The vacancy warning level rose from green to blue. |
