Fifth Circuit Family Court innovates to avoid lengthy divorce trials
July 13, 2011
Hawaii: Last month, the Kaua`i Fifth Circuit Family Court implemented a program designed to allow couples obtaining a divorce to take part in the Contested Divorce Mediation program before trial. Through a confidential process, a court appointed mediator helps the couple resolve issues financial and child custody issues. So far, only couples with both parties represented by council can participate in the program.[1]
Of the new program Judge Edmund D. Acoba said, "We are excited to be able to offer this program and thank all the attorney mediators who made it possible by volunteering their time. Hopefully, this program will not only help litigants become active participants in reaching an amicable agreement, it will also alleviate the demand for trial time in the Family Court."[1]
