The Judicial Update

June 3, 2011

South Carolina: A former Magistrate judge for Horry County, South Carolina has been publicly reprimanded by the South Carolina Supreme Court and barred from seeking future judicial office in the state without first gaining permission from it's Disciplinary Council.

James O. Hughes, Jr. was reprimanded on May 30, 2011 for making inappropriate comments and sharing an inappropriate image on his cell phone. He indicated that he regretted his conduct.[1]

Hughes had been suspended from the court in 2010. After a disciplinary measure was filed by the Office of Disciplinary Counsel, a state investigation found that the judge "posed a threat to the public and was not effectively carrying out justice."[2]
