Janet Stauffer is the Position 2 circuit court judge of the Oregon 7th Judicial District in Oregon. She won re-election without opposition in the primary election on May 17, 2016.

Selection method

Judges of the Oregon Supreme Court, Oregon Court of Appeals and Oregon Circuit Courts are all selected in an identical manner. They are chosen in nonpartisan elections to serve six-year terms, after which they must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving.[1]

The chief judges of the circuit courts are appointed by the chief justice of the state supreme court to serve a two-year term.[1]

Qualifications
To serve on the circuit court, a judge must be:[1]

  • a U.S. citizen;
  • a state resident for at least three years;
  • a resident of his or her circuit for at least one year;
  • a state bar member; and
  • under the age of 75.

Stauffer defeated opponent Thomas Peachey with 51.3 percent of the vote.[2]

Education

Stauffer received her B.A. from Seattle University and her J.D. from the University of Washington.[3][4]

Career

Stauffer has been a litigation attorney who has worked for banks and creditors in bankruptcy court. She also works with her husband, as partner, other trial cases, including personal injury. She has served as an attorney for various law firms and solo practitioners since her passing of the Washignton Bar Association in 1986.[4]
