Funding
At the time of this election, the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk did not publish school board candidate campaign finance reports online. Ballotpedia staffers requested this information, but the only free method of viewing the files was at their office.
The Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk targeted the end of 2018 to make school board candidate campaign finance reports available online for free. From that point forward, Ballotpedia began including campaign finance data for Los Angeles County school board candidates.[7][8][9]
The first campaign finance reporting deadline was September 24, 2015, and the second one was October 22, 2015. If candidates raised or spent more than $1,000 from a single source, including their own funds, between August 5, 2015, and November 2, 2015, they had to file a campaign finance report within 24 hours.[10]
If you have any information regarding the campaign finance disclosures in this race, please contact the school board elections team at editor@ballotpedia.org.

Cobian highlighted the following issues on her campaign website:
“ | I am currently a Board Member for the El Monte City School District and a mother of four.
I love our community and know how important a quality education is for our children. I am part of a family that has been in El Monte for more than 35 years and involved with education and education policies for more than 40 years. I know that strong schools lead to strong communities and a strong future. As a former full-time EMCSD teacher and now full-time parent in the district, I know first-hand the impact our decisions have on our teachers and students in the classroom. I am proud of the hard-working parents, teachers and administrators I have had the pleasure of working with. I know that smart decisions can make a huge difference for our schools and our students. As a Board Member, I have supported: I enjoy serving on this Board because I have been able to make a difference for our students. I want to continue to make sure all students have the best we can give. I received my Bachelors Degree from UC Santa Cruz, Masters Degree from the University of Chicago, and teaching credential from CSU Los Angeles. Prior to teaching in EMCSD, I was a speechwriter for the Governor of California and interned in the White House, so I understand the process of governing and the politics of education. I also understand school districts work best when the board members listen to the community -- when the board, the teachers, and the administration work collaboratively on behalf of our students. I have a deep respect for our community and a personal commitment to the quality of our schools. As we continue to implement the Common Core Curriculum, as well as our new state funding and testing systems, I will make sure our Board decisions set a strong foundation for education in this district for generations to come. Vote JENNIFER COBIAN for El Monte City School Board and together we can help our students succeed.[13] |
