Haugen ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House to represent Washington's 3rd District. He and Jaime Herrera Beutler advanced past the blanket primary on August 7, 2012 and faced off during the general election on November 6, 2012.[4] Beutler won.[1]

Incumbent Jaime Herrera Beutler (R) had the fundraising advantage as well as endorsements from the media.[5][6] Haugen did not receive the state Democratic Party endorsement.[6]
