Candidate statement
Kinsey submitted the following statement to the Gainesville Sun on July 29, 2016:

Our School Board needs a new voice, one with a fresh viewpoint that offers relevant ideas to current issues. My experience has afforded me a unique perspective that historically has not been represented. I grew up in La Crosse and have been a lifelong resident of this community. I worked in a Title 1 elementary school until I earned my associate’s degree in elementary education from Santa Fe College. The experience of engaging with those students and their families helped me to understand that our community cannot succeed without equal access to quality education. For the past decade, I have been actively engaged at the Kirby-Smith Center on many issues including magnet programs, success measures and the superintendent search. A quality education must be available to all, regardless of class, color, creed or anything else. Alachua County needs a cohesive school system that ensures a safe environment for learning, facilitates opportunities, and raises the performance outcomes for students and schools. A child’s success should not be determined by their zip code or the school zone they are assigned. According to the Florida Department of Education, 45 percent of the students in Alachua County Public Schools are performing below proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics. There is still a significant disparity in the high school graduation rates between majority and minority students. Our progressive community cannot accept this. We must make a change. You deserve a leader who will confront our most significant issues and challenge the status quo. When these problems are ignored, we jeopardize our personal and shared security, economic prosperity, community wellness and social justice. The three main areas of focus for my platform are: 1) Innovation: to provide more creative academics and 21st century workforce career skills; 2) Opportunity: to provide equitable access for all students to have quality teaching and rigorous engaging curriculum, including pre-kindergarten, and 3) Community: to create safety-nets, partnerships and pathways for parents to take ownership of their education system school-by-school. These three areas will foster local control and a deeper sense of responsibility in moving Alachua County Public Schools to a preeminent status on the same trajectory as Santa Fe College and the University of Florida. Experience doesn’t only come from the dais; we need a new approach to improve our schools. Having been a student not so long ago and then working in the system uniquely qualifies me, through direct experience, to represent the voices of every student and their families. My passion for this job, personal integrity, and willingness to listen and represent our community adds to my qualifications. I will fulfill these promises to you if I am elected: Every decision will be centered on a commitment to the success of every student. Your concerns for our school system will not be ignored — even if we disagree. You will have a partner willing to collaborate with you to achieve our common goals, for our students and our community. I ask for your vote on Aug. 30 for Juliun Kinsey, Alachua County School Board.[4] |
