Kansas Supreme Court to hear a case outside of Topeka for the first time
April 11, 2011
Kansas: The Kansas Supreme Court will travel to Salina on April 13th to hear four appeals cases at the Salina City County Building. This marks the first time, according to court records, that the Supreme Court has ever presided over cases outside of Topeka. These hearings are part of an on-going judicial outreach program to give citizens across Kansas greater access and information about their highest court. Chief Justice Lawton Nuss also explained, "Besides educating the public on the work of the Supreme Court, we want to better educate ourselves on the operations and needs of the local courts, so that together we can better serve our citizens." Joining the Supreme Court for one of the cases which deals with workers' compensation are District Court Judges Benjamin J. Sexton and Hannelore Kitts. They will replace Justices Carol Beier and Nancy Moritz Caplinger, who have been recused from the case. The other three cases which will be heard are criminal cases. The Justices will also meet informally with judges and attorneys in Salina while they are there.[1]
