Kelly Schmidt
Kelly Schmidt (Republican Party) was the North Dakota Treasurer. She assumed office in 2005. She left office on January 1, 2021.
Schmidt (Republican Party) ran for re-election for North Dakota Treasurer. She won in the general election on November 6, 2016.
Schmidt was an at-large delegate to the 2016 Republican National Convention from North Dakota. All North Dakota delegates were unpledged.[1]
Biography
A native of North Dakota, Schmidt is a 2005 graduate of the National Institute for Public Finance at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.[2]
Political career
North Dakota treasurer (2005-2021)
Schmidt was first elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2008, 2012, and 2016. In 2011, she was elected President of the National Association of State Treasurers. She has also been recognized as a "Toll Fellow" by the Council on State Governments in 2009 for her work in state government.[2] She left office in 2021.

Schmidt ran as a Republican for re-election as treasurer of North Dakota in 2016. She was unopposed in the Republican primary contest and faced challengers Tim Mathem (D) and Eric Olson (Lib.) in the November 8 general election.[3]
Schmidt had been considering a run for governor.[4]

2012
Schmidt won re-election as treasurer in 2012. She ran unopposed in the primary election and defeated Democrat Ross Mushik in the general election.[5][6]

Schmidt was an at-large delegate to the 2016 Republican National Convention from North Dakota.
Delegate rules
Delegates from North Dakota to the 2016 Republican National Convention were selected by committee at the state Republican convention in April 2016. North Dakota GOP bylaws did not require delegates to indicate which presidential candidate they prefer at the time of their selection. At the national convention, delegates from North Dakota were unbound on all ballots.
Delegate allocation
North Dakota had 28 delegates at the 2016 Republican National Convention: 22 at-large delegates, three congressional district delegates, and three national party leaders (identified on the chart below as RNC delegates). Delegates to the state convention were selected at district conventions, where no presidential preference poll was taken. The state's Republican National Convention delegation was selected at the state GOP convention, April 1-3, 2016.[8][9]
