The August 26, 2014, general election in Escambia County featured three seats up for election. Incumbent Linda Moultrie faced a challenge from newcomers Laura Dortch Edler and Linda Moultrie in District 3. Fellow board members Jeff Bergosh and Gerald W. Boone ran for re-election without opposition in Districts 1 and 2, respectively.

The general election determined if candidates for each seat could garner a majority of the vote total. Because no candidate received 50 percent plus one of the general election votes in the District 3 race, the top two vote recipients, Moultrie and Nichols, advanced to the runoff election on November 4, 2014.

Campaign themes

2014

Moultrie provided the following answers to questions from the Pensacola News Journal:

Describe the platform/mission statement of your campaign.

My campaign platform is “A Vote for Linda Moultrie is a vote for Honesty, Integrity and Transparency and above all. A Vote for Linda Moultrie is a vote for putting students first.” I believe all children should have access to a quality education. I will continue to advocate for the restoration of state funding needed to provide a quality education for all children.

What are the top three issues in the community that could be directly impacted by your position?

The top three issues in the community that could be directly impacted by my position is student achievement, parental involvement in education and business/community partnerships, all impacting economic development.

Why should voters elect you on Nov. 4?

Voters should re-elect me because I believe in and advocate for public education. I put the needs of students first. Having served on the Board for the past six years, I have institutional knowledge and bring a different perspective to the Board. The current Board is composed of a retired principal, a retired teacher, a retired PTA president/teacher and a businessman. I bring to the Board, the community perspective. I have 38 years of work experience and the knowledge of the needs of the people in District 3 and the entire community. Not only have I worked in District 3, I also live and have educated my children in District 3. I now have grandchildren who are currently in the public school system. I have also faced many of the same challenges as families in this community and I understand their needs. In addition to my serving as a School Board member, I give back to the community by volunteering. I currently coordinate a tutoring program for the Bellview Youth Association Football Program; serve on the Every Child a Reader (ECARE) Board, the Community Action Agency Board of Directors (chair), the Florida High School Athletic Association Board of Directors and mentor two students as part of the School District Mentoring Program.

What is the top challenge facing Northwest Florida? What is your solution to that challenge?

The top challenge for Northwest Florida is economic development. I believe that in order to grow our economy Northwest Florida must create a unified plan for the community with education being the foundation. Northwest Florida must seek out and continue to attract high paying jobs to the area and create entrepreneurship opportunities to maintain a young, viable workforce. We must continue to improve the education of our students and align our education system to meet the demands of new employers as well as being prepared for entrepreneur endeavors.

Specifically, what project would you like to see come from RESTORE money from the BP oil spill?

I would like to see a project that will provide educational opportunities to students in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.[4]
