Long-time U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee member defeated in primary election

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Long time Senate Judiciary Committee member Arlen Specter was defeated by Congressman Joe Sestak in a Democratic Primary election on May 18, 2010.
Specter was defeated by Congressman Sestak 54 to 46 percent, with 99% of precincts reporting.[1] Specter conceded defeat at 10:30 PM Eastern Time on May 18th, in a speech to his supporters at a hotel in Philadelphia[2]
Specter was first elected in 1980 to the U.S. Senate as a Republican and was appointed to the committee shortly after he was first sworn into office in 1981.[3] Specter was Chairman of the committee from 2005 to 2007 and served as the minority ranking member from 2007 until 2009, when he switched parties.[3]
