Washington: Governor Jay Inslee made his first appointment to the Washington Supreme Court on May 1, 2014, selecting King County Superior Court Judge Mary Yu. She will replace retired Justice James Johnson. The Governor stated:

Judge Yu has distinguished herself throughout her career as someone of great intellect, dedication and compassion.[1]
—Gov. Jay Inslee[2]

Yu's appointment is marked with "firsts." With a Mexican mother and Chinese father, Yu will become the court's first Asian-American and its first Latina justice. Additionally, she is the court's first gay justice. As a superior court judge, she was the first to perform a same-sex marriage in Washington in December of 2012.[2][3]

She responded to the appointment, saying:

Trial court judges, at every level of court, are the workhorses of our system of justice...I am proud to come from their ranks and will do all that I can to remember that the trial court remains the place where the law is actually applied to everyday life.[1]
Mary Yu[2]

She will appear on the ballot this year to seek election to the remaining 2 years of Justice Johnson's unexpired term.[2]
