Maurice Merten

Maurice Merten is a former judge on the Lane County Circuit Court in Oregon. The court has jurisdiction over Lane County and is located within the 2nd Judicial District. He joined the court in 1976.[1]
Merten won re-election to another term without opposition in the primary election on May 17, 2016. He retired on August 31, 2020.[2]
Biography
Merten received his B.S. and J.D. from the University of Oregon. He began his legal career as a federal prosecutor who handled organized crime cases. He then served as the chief trial deputy in the Lane County District Attorney's Office prior to joining the Lane County Circuit Court in 1976.[1][3]

Selection method

Judges of the Oregon Supreme Court, Oregon Court of Appeals and Oregon Circuit Courts are all selected in an identical manner. They are chosen in nonpartisan elections to serve six-year terms, after which they must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving.[4]
The chief judges of the circuit courts are appointed by the chief justice of the state supreme court to serve a two-year term.[4]
Qualifications
To serve on the circuit court, a judge must be:[4]
- a U.S. citizen;
- a state resident for at least three years;
- a resident of his or her circuit for at least one year;
- a state bar member; and
- under the age of 75.

Merten was re-elected to the Lane County Circuit Court in 2010 after running unopposed. Merten received 98.79 percent of the vote.[5]
