California: This week, California Supreme Court justice Carlos Moreno announced his retirement from the court, effective February 28, 2011. In his resignation, Moreno shared his interest in returning to the practice of law in the private sector.[1]

Moreno joined the California Supreme Court in 2001. Prior to this position, he served as a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Central District of California. His first judicial appointment was to the Compton Municipal Court in 1986. From there Moreno spent five years as a judge on the Los Angeles County Superior Court.[2]

With Moreno's retirement, the court will lose its only Latino member and only Democrat. This retirement allows newly elected Governor Jerry Brown his first appointment to the high court.[1]
