New York could become the first to expand gun control laws

ALBANY, New York:New York could become the first state to pass new gun control laws in the wake of the December shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. The vote could come as soon as today.
According to the Assembly speaker, Sheldon Silver, debate remains on how to financially assist school districts improve security. The new bill expands a ban on assault rifles, reduces the legal capacity of gun magazines to seven rounds, requires background checks for private gun sales, increases penalties for gun crimes and allows judges to order mentally ill people to outpatient treatment.[1]
