New report shows threats towards federal judges increased

Washington, D.C.: The United States Department of Justice released a new report showing that threats towards federal judges and prosecutors have doubled in the past six years.[1]
The report released by the Justice Department shows that threats against federal judges and prosecutors from 2003 to 2008 increased from 592 to 1,278. Also, the report raised concerns that threats against federal judges and prosecutors are not being reported in a prompt fashion. The Justice Department cited a lack of coordination between the U.S. Marshal's service and local law enforcement as the main cause. The database that the Marshal's service keeps to monitor threats does not have data on 40 percent of known threats during the time period the report studied.[1]
The concern of security for judges has increased since 2003 when the husband and mother of current Northern District of Illinois federal judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow were killed by a disgruntled litigant.[1]
