Oregon: The Oregon Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the appeal of a group dedicated to the abolishment of the death penalty. The group is appealing based on evidence that convicted death row inmate Gary Haugen was denied a competency hearing by the Marion County Circuit Court. Haugen's attorneys recommended further evaluation based on Haugen's first meeting with a neuropsychologist showing signs of cognitive defects. The court denied the hearing and is set to move ahead with Haugen's execution, scheduled for August. [1]
UPDATE: November 25, 2011
Governor Kitzhaber announced on November 22 that he will not allow the execution of Gary Haugen, or any death row inmate, to take place while he is in office. [2] See Article: Governor Kitzhaber puts hold on Oregon executions
