San Mateo Hotel Tax Increase, Measure M (November 2009)
A City of San Mateo Hotel Tax, Measure M ballot question was on the November 3, 2009 ballot for voters in the City of San Mateo in San Mateo County, where it was approved.[1]
Measure M increased the City of San Mateo’s hotel tax from 10% to 12%. Any guest who stays at a hotel or similar establishment within the city borders of San Mateo pays the tax. The additional 2% hotel tax authorized by Measure M is levied and collected at the same time and in the same manner as the existing hotel tax.
Hotel taxes are general taxes. Revenues raised from hotel taxes go into the city's general fund where they can be used for any general governmental function of the city.
The Measure M tax increase went into effect ten days after the date the election results were officially declared final by the City Council.
Measure M was one of two tax-hike measures on the November ballot in San Mateo. The other, Measure L, proposed a hike in San Mateo's sales tax.

Path to the ballot
The San Mateo City Council unanimously approved the tax increase, and putting the tax increase on the ballot, on July 13, 2009. By state law, a minimum of 2/3rds of the City Council had to vote in favor of the tax increase before it could go on the ballot.
