Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Republican. Incumbent Dave Reichert (R) defeated Tony Ventrella (D) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Reichert and Ventrella defeated Alida Skold (D), Santiago Ramos (D), Margaret Walsh (We R Independent Party), and Keith Arnold (I) in the top-two primary on August 2, 2016. Prior to the primary, Tony Ventrella withdrew from the race, but he still won the nomination. As a result, Ventrella relaunched his campaign.[1][2][3]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Ramos' campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Economy: As a small business owner, I know the value that small businesses contribute to a community. I will work with small businesses, helping them work with federal and local governments, and encouraging their investment so that our economy continues to grow. We need to maintain the infrastructure that is needed for a strong economy and improve education so that we continue to have a capable workforce.
  • National Security: We must also coordinate our military with the strength of our diplomatic arm. We must devote the necessary level of military resources to confront the security threats posed by ISIS and other extremist groups. We need a balanced approach to current national security threats to address the short-term national security and the long-term objectives.
  • Energy: Congress must be committed to creating an energy policy that allows us to be independent from foreign sources, brings down the costs for all Americans, and invests in new alternative energy technologies. We need to take control of our country’s energy future. We need a steady and balanced approach to reduce our dependence on oil. To do this, Congress must promote investment in clean, renewable energy.
  • Immigration: We cannot continue to wait any longer to pass a comprehensive immigration reform. Our system is not working and it must recognize the importance of sound immigration policies in a comprehensive way. Current laws, regulations, and enforcement do not take into account the importance of families, the economy and national security. The current system does not reflect our American values.[4]
