U.S. Supreme Court overturns Florida high court ruling
March 4, 2010
Florida: The U.S. Supreme Court overturned, on Monday, March 1, a ruling by the Florida Supreme Court that would have given Thomas Rigterink, convicted of two murders, a new trial. Rigterink was initially given a new trial by the state Supreme Court because, they said, the detectives who interrogated him did not properly inform him that he had right to have a lawyer present during the questioning. In the ruling the U.S. Supreme Court asked the Florida court to reconsider its decision based on the U.S. Supreme Courts ruling in a similar case, in which the court had ruled that the defendant was given enough information concerning his rights, the week before.[1]
