W. Brent West is a Utah Second Judicial District judge for the Ogden District Court.[1] West was appointed to this position in July 1996 and his term expires in 2018.[2]

Education

West received his J.D. from Southern Methodist University in 1975.[2]

Career

West began his career in private practice from 1976 to 1979. From 1976 to 1984, he served as assistant corporate counsel, assistant city attorney, and chief prosecutor for Ogden City. West was appointed to the Second Circuit Court by Governor Scott M. Matheson in March of 1984. He then became a judge of the Second District Court in July of 1996.[2]

Elections

2012

West stood for retention election in 2012. On November 6, 2012, West was retained with 81.6% of the vote and a total of 142,813 votes.[3][4]

Judicial Performance Evaluation recommendation

The Utah Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission compiled information from attorneys, court staff and jurors about the performance of all judges up for retention in 2012. Judges were evaluated based on five criteria.

A judge must score at least 3 out of 5 in each of these categories to meet the minimum performance standard. 87 attorneys responded to the following questions.

  • Legal Ability: 4.21
  • Communication: 4.24
  • Integrity: 4.39
  • Judicial temperament: 4.30
  • Administrative: 4.28
