Hawaii's first hurricane in 22 years has made landfall but they may still be struck by a second storm. The primary election, however, is not canceled. Voters are still heading to the polls today.
The challenging primary for incumbent Gov. Neil Abercrombie and a congressional race are rated as one of the top five primaries to watch. In total, the state of Hawaii is holding a primary for congressional, executive, state, and municipal seats.
Incumbent Gov. Neil Abercrombie is struggling in the Democratic primary, with challenger David Ige ahead by 11 points in a June poll. Abercrombie's decision to appoint Brian E. Schatz rather than Colleen Hanabusa to replace deceased U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye in 2012 (Hanabusa was Inouye's preferred successor) has contributed to a movement by prominent Democrats toward Ige. The primary battle between Brian Schatz and Colleen Hanabusa was highlighted as one of the top five primaries to watch in 2014.[1] The widow of Hawaii Senator Daniel K. Inouye endorsed Hanabusa’s bid against Sen. Brian Schatz (D), a move she said honors one of the late senator’s “last requests.”
Twenty-one state legislative incumbents (7 state senators and 14 state reps) face primary opposition in today's election. State Senate District 4 incumbent Fay Pua Hanohano (D) faces five primary challengers. Hanohano was accused in February 2014 of making racist and abusive remarks towards the head of Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources' staff.[2]
Abercrombie has the power to postpone or delay the election in areas affected by the hurricane. If elections in one area are postponed, the rest of the state will continue to conduct the elections and release results on Saturday night.[3][4]
