Edwin T. Peterson was a judge of the Utah Eighth Judicial District. He was nominated by Governor Gary Herbert in 2009 and was retained in 2018.[1] Peterson retired from the court on January 15, 2021.[2]

Education

Peterson earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Utah and his law degree from the University of Utah's S.J. Quinney College of Law. He is also a graduate of the Judge Advocate Staff Officer course at the U.S. Air Force's Air War College.[3]

Career

Peterson has worked as an associate with law firm Maddox & Snuffer and as a deputy city attorney in Murray. He was a pro tem district-court judge in the 3rd Circuit Court in West Valley City and assistant Utah attorney general in the Child Protection Division. He has also worked in the Uintah County Attorney's Office as a prosecutor and in the office's civil division.[3]

Elections

2012

Peterson stood for retention election in 2012. On November 6, 2012, Peterson was retained with 84.2 percent of the vote and a total of 13,882 votes.[4][5]

Judicial Performance Evaluation recommendation

The Utah Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission compiled information from attorneys, court staff and jurors about the performance of all judges up for retention in 2012. Judges were evaluated based on five criteria.

A judge must score at least 3 out of 5 in each of these categories to meet the minimum performance standard. 63 attorneys responded to the following questions.

  • Legal Ability: 3.89
  • Communication: 3.92
  • Integrity: 4.03
  • Judicial temperament: 4.09
  • Administrative: 4.21
