An Eugene Gas Tax Referendum did not qualify for the November 3, 2009 ballot in Lane County for voters in the City of Eugene.[1] Tax referendum supporters failed to meet the signatures requirements to place the measure on the November ballot.[2]
On July 27, 2009, the Eugene City Council voted 7-0 to make permanent a 2-cent part of the city's current nickel-a-gallon gas tax. When the tax was initially imposed, two cents of it was said to be a temporary tax.
The Oregon Petroleum Association is opposed to the city's determination to make the temporary gas tax permanent, and has said it will launch a petition drive to put the measure on the ballot as a veto referendum. The OPA will have 30 days to collect signatures of 8,041 registered City of Eugene voters.
Signatures
Referendum supporters had 30 days to collect a minimum of 8,041 valid signatures. As of September 12, 2009 referendum supporters did not collect enough valid signatures to place the measure on the November ballot. A total of 9,309 signatures were submitted but only 65% were deemed valid. Most signatures, according to county officials were rejected because voters were not Eugene residents.[2]
