Cheney earned her bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Illinois - Urbana in 1983. She went on to receive her master's degree in Public Affairs Reporting from the University of Illinois - Springfield. She then earned her JD from Northwestern University School of Law in 1991. Cheney is currently the partner of a major law firm in Chicago.

Cheney ran in the 2012 election for Illinois House of Representatives District 84. Cheney was defeated by Stephanie Kifowit in the Democratic primary on March 20, 2012.[2][3]
