Alan D. Scheinkman was the presiding justice on the second department of the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division. He was appointed by Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo on January 1, 2018.[1] He left office on December 31, 2020.[2]

He was previously the District Administrative Judge for the 9th Judicial District of New York. He was appointed to this position in 2009. He also served as a justice for the Westchester County Supreme Court from 2007 to 2018. His term would have expired in 2020.[3][4][5]

Education

Scheinkman received his B.A. degree from George Washington University in 1972 and his J.D. degree from St. John's University School of Law in 1975.[5]

Career

Scheinkman began his career in 1975 as a law clerk to Hon. Matthew Jasen of the New York State Court of Appeals. In 1977, he joined the law firm of Marshall, Bratter, Greene, Allison & Tucker. He then left to join the firm of Golenblock & Barell in 1979. In 1982 and 1983, he worked as associate counsel to the New York State Temporary Commission on the Recodification of the Family Court Act. He then worked as an associate professor of law at St. John's University from 1984 to 1990. From 1990 to 1997, he served as a partner of the law firm Scheinkman, Fredman & Kosan. He then worked briefly in 1997 as associate minority counsel for the New York State Senate before becoming a Westchester County Attorney in 1998. He worked in that capacity through 2000. He then practiced law as a partner of Epstein, Becker & Green from 2001 to 2002 and as a partner of Delbello, Donellan, Weingarten, Tartaglia, Wise & Wiederkehr, LLP from 2002 to 2006.

Scheinkman's judicial career began in 2007 when he became a Supreme Court Justice and an Associate Justice of the Appellate Term (9th and 10th Judicial Districts). He left the Appellate Term in 2009 when he was appointed Administrative Judge of the 9th Judicial District.[5]
