I'm Andrew Ikechukwu Ashiofu. My life experiences make me uniquely qualified to represent the 37th legislative district. I am HIV-positive, and I know what it's like to fight for the healthcare that we deserve. I have been formerly unhoused, and know what it is like to lose your home. I am an immigrant, and know what it is like to be treated as an outsider. I am a front-line worker, and I know what it is like to have to work through dangerous situations in order to pay the rent. In Olympia, I will work to create equity, justice, and prosperity in our community. I hope to earn your vote to be our next State Representative.
  • My lived experiences are shared by so many people in my community - but they are unheard of in our legislature. My experiences navigating our broken systems in healthcare and housing give me a deep, gears-level understanding of the issues facing our community, and an abiding passion for change.
  • I haven’t just endured these problems - I have worked to correct them. Through my positions on the Seattle LGBTQ+ Commission, the HIV Planning Council, and the WA State Coalition of African Leaders, I have prevented deportations, expanded access to healthcare for the HIV+ residents, and fought for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Representation matters. During the more difficult times in my life, it meant the world to me to see black leaders, queer leaders, and immigrant leaders taking charge in Washington and advocate for their community. It gave me hope for the future - both our future, and my own. I hope that my candidacy shows the path forward for future leaders in my community.
Housing is a passion of mine - too much of our wages are lost to rent. As someone who has been unhoused myself, these struggles are deeply personal to me. With fewer and fewer of us able to invest in a permanent home, entire generations lose the ability to build wealth for their families. In order to remedy these gaps, I plan to champion policies that would build up our capacity for affordable and social housing, push back against exclusionary zoning, and increase tenant protections for our renters.

Healthcare is a human right - but one that I, and so many others, have been denied. That's why I have worked on the Seattle/King County HIV Planning Council, the Harborview Madison Clinic Community Advisory Board, and the Washington State Department of Health COVID Vaccine Implementation Council. I support a single-payer approach that allows the federal government to bargain for better prices, and allows equitable access to all our citizens. In the meantime, I will advocate for price ceilings on life-saving medications like insulin and PrEP.

I also believe that there must always be an open and accessible path to unionization for our workers. I have been entangled in my own fight to unionize for the past few years, trying to move past the barriers put in place by my employers to become a member of the AFA. In particular, I would seek to ensure the rights of gig workers who are left behind by our labor laws, and would lend my voice and support to any who seek to organize.
