The Arizona Civil Partnersips Measure did not appear on the November 2, 2010 ballot in the state of Arizona as an initiated constitutional amendment.
Gay rights activists were supporting the initiative that would "establish civil partnerships, which since 2005 have allowed same-sex couples to legally register their relationships." The initiative began to circulate in late 2008 when the state saw a measure passed that constituted marriage as only between a man and a woman. The petition drive deadline to submit signatures for ballot consideration was July 1, 2010. The petition drive effort must have collected at least 230,046 signatures since it was a proposed constitutional amendment. However, sponsors did not submit signatures by the deadline, according to the Arizona Secretary of State's office.
According to Gino Mariano, a supporter of the initiative: "We're not fighting for marriage; we're fighting for equal rights."[1]

Summary of initiative
The summary of the initiative, as stated on the Arizona Secretary of State's website, read:
- A Civil Partnership is a legal contract between two people of the same sex ("civil partners") which guarantees the same benefits and Consequences of an Opposite-sex Marriage that is recognized under the Arizona State Constitution unless otherwise prescribed by the Civil Partnership Proposition.[2]
Constitutional changes
If enacted by Arizona voters, the measure would have amended the Arizona Constitution by adding Article XXI.[3]
Path to the ballot
The group organizing the circulation effort must have gathered the required 230,046 signatures for proposed constitutional amendments by the July 1, 2010 deadline.
