Arizona legislator's case to be heard as appeal
May 11, 2010
Arizona: Judge Crane McClennen of the Maricopa County Superior Court has decided that he will consider Representative Doug Quelland's appeal of an order that he be removed from office as an appeal to the court and will not grant his request for a new trial. The Citizens Clean Elections Commission ordered, in May of 2009, that Quelland be removed from office for violating state campaign finance laws by padding his publicly funded 2008 campaign with private spending. An administrative judge upheld the commission's ruling but Quelland challenged it and remains if office while the appeal is pending.[1]
Update
Rep. Quelland lost his latest appeal to hold on to his legislative seat on Monday, May 17, when Judge McClennen upheld the findings of the Citizens Clean Elections Commission that Quelland had violated the state's public campaign-finance. Unless Quelland appeals again he will lose his seat and be charged $30,500 in fines.[2]
