In the next profile of our 2014 battleground districts, Ballotpedia is taking an in-depth look at Florida's 18th Congressional District's 2014 election.
Current incumbent: Patrick Murphy (D) was first elected in 2012.[4]
Murphy defeated incumbent Allen West (R) in a race that was too close to call for more than one week after the general election on November 6, 2012.[5][6]
Murphy is a member of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's Frontline Program. The program is designed to help protect vulnerable Democratic incumbents heading into the 2014 election.[7] [8]
Unlike the incumbent he defeated, Murphy started off the 2012 race by "running to the center, playing up his bipartisan credentials."[9]
According to outside analysis, Murphy is one of the 10 most vulnerable incumbents in 2014.[10]
2012 MOV: Murphy ousted then-incumbent Allen West (R) in a race that was too close to call for more than one week after the general election on November 6, 2012.[5][11] Murphy won by just 1,904 votes, or a margin of victory of 0.6%, over West.
2014 candidates: Murphy is running unopposed in the Democratic primary. On the Republican ticket, six candidates are in the running for the nomination to challenge Murphy in the general election: Former Tequesta councilman Calvin Turnquest, former state Representative Carl Domino, 2006 Republican U.S. Senate candidate Alan Schlesinger, Beverly Joy Hires, Nick Robert Wukoson and Brian Lara.[12]
What made it a Ballotpedia battleground district?: Our analysis points to the district being a battleground with a vulnerable Democratic incumbent in a Republican leaning district. Cook's PVI shows the district as R+3 and Fairvote rates the district as 47.7% Democratic. Additionally, the MOV in 2012 was just 0.6%, the district went to Mitt Romney by 4.1% in 2012 and to Barack Obama by 3.1% in 2008.
FEC: Murphy raised more than $1.07 million in 2013, making him one of the top House fundraisers in 2013.[13] Based on the latest campaign finance report, Murphy had a significant lead, with more than two million cash on hand. Carl Domino came in second with slightly more than $387,000 and Brian Lara was third with approximately $103,234 cash on hand.[14][15][16]
