The Belmont Open Space Measure may be headed to the November 2010 ballot in Belmont in California.
The ballot measure proposed a two-thirds approval from voters before a developer could build on any of the 17 city-owned parks and open spaces in Belmont.[1]
In June 2009 the measure failed to be approved by the city council. Despite the ballot's failure to be approved, Feierbach said that she intends to collect signatures for the initiative in 2010. Feierbach noted that it is too late to collect signatures for the November ballot. She added that she did not want to spend taxpayer money on a special election.[2]
Background
In 2009, Belmont Council member Coralin Feierbach submitted the proposal in an attempt to put the resolution on the November ballot. The ballot measure, if approved, is estimated to cost the city $10,000. However, on June 10,2009 the measure failed to be approved by the city council. Councilman Warren Lieberman refused to vote on the issue. “This ordinance doesn’t give us greater protection ... it might weaken it,” said Lieberman.[3]
