Hi, my name is Bethany Bachman. I am a mother of two amazing kids, Nixie and Jaxen, and wife to my rock and soulmate, Matthew. Being adopted, I place a high value on family values and have been engaged in my children's academic journey from the beginning. I have been an engaged parent within BCSD for over 10 years. I can always be found helping anyone in need at various school sites, attending meetings at the BCSD District office, and presenting alongside district staff and admin. My hope is that I can use my experience and leadership to help all students, parents, and staff realize the importance of their voice.
One of the areas that I am personally passionate about is Mental Health. I feel that providing organizations, skilled professionals, and creative outlets for anyone experiencing or in need of Mental Health service is vital for individuals in our community and students in our school systems. I feel that community college should be free to all students no matter their age, or possible occupation. It is an investment in our community and professions that are always growing. I am a proud Ally for the LGTBQ+ community. I will always advocate for this population of people on a local, state, and national level. I feel that equity in all matters with all people is needed now more than ever. We need to stand together as one community, one voice, with a powerful message of equitable practices.
I believe that an elected official needs to listen. Listening to all sides of an issues, but not just surface listening. Officials must actively listen, ask questions when something doesn't add up, or they need greater understanding. Not being afraid to say, "I don't know" it won't make you look weak or uneducated. The people that you serve must know that you are there for them. They elected you to the position you hold, you need to take their trust and guard it.
The first historical event that I remember was the Centennial Olympic Park bombing. In 1996 I was 13 years old when the United States and the Olympic community was shocked with the pipe bombing. I remember this in particular because I cousin's husband was an Olympic athlete at that time. Our whole family had been watching and was excited to share in the moment with him. When news broke of the event I remember my grandmother calling my aunt to make sure they were ok, safe and unharmed. The days after the bombing were very tense and it was all over the news. As a teenager I remember thinking that there were kids there my age, both as spectators and athletes. Wondering what was going through their minds at that time. If they still wanted to be there, would the leave, would they cancel the Olympics.
Changeless by Gail Carriger. I have read this book, and the series that it is in about 7 times. I have encouraged and recommend others to read this book and series. The writing style of Ms. Carriger is just a joy to read, she has a way of getting a reader engaged in the characters, the setting, what is happening to characters in her books. This book in particular added several side characters that I just fell in love with. These characters add a further richiness to the series as a whole. The first book in the series is still really good but I really think it takes off in Changeless.
One of my biggest struggles is self doubt. I want to know that I am doing the right thing, on the right road. When I get in front of people I want to know that I am coming across right. I am being relatable? Did I convey my message in a manner that was fun and understandable? I want those that I am helping to know I am here for them. I will give 100% to a task, but there are times that I feel like I could have done more. I could have added one more slide, said something inspiring, reached one more person. Then I feel like I didn't do enough. This struggle thankfully I don't have to handle alone. I have family that helps reassure me when I start to feel like I failed.
