County Sales and Use Tax Increase (November 2009)
There was a County Sales and Use Tax Increase referendum on the November 3 ballot in Harnett County.
This measure sought to increase the county wide sales taxes by .25 percent.[1]

Background
Voters were also given this choice in 2007 but that tax was defeated. The money generated from this tax would have gone towards new school construction in the county.[3] Although this tax increase was again defeated, it was not by as large a margin as in 2007. The main reasons voters gave after voting was that property taxes were already high and money is tight no matter where one lives. It is also thought that the county will not try to pass this again, at least not for a while. The county budget is already tight and with the increase of school age children the county is not sure where the money will come from to fund schools.[4]
