When first elected, I committed to fix up the city and keep us safe. I kept that commitment with a new pier, pier plaza and attractive downtown. Shell Beach Streetscape is complete with a multiuse path and slower, safer traffic. One third of all streets have been recently paved and four parks have new playground equipment. I led the effort to build new fire and police stations which are now under construction. Our fire department response times will shorten and police will work out of a state-of-the-art facility. As President of the SLO Council of Governments, I advocated for the third lane on 101 Southbound and that project is now funded to help alleviate traffic impacts.

I have been a leader in reducing wildfire risk through my service as Vice President of the County Fire Safe Council which recently allocated $500,000 for that effort.

I have a PhD in Chemistry and have had two careers: one as a university professor and the other in emergency preparedness.
  • Public Safety is my top priority and I proud to have led our City to construct a new fire station and new police station. When completed, our fire response time will be reduced by 90 seconds which will be life saving in some cases. Our police will operate out of a far better facility so they can be more effective. I serve as Vice President of the SLO Fire Safe Council which has been reducing fire risk throughout the county.
  • Quality of Life for our residents so they can recreate and enjoy our beautiful city. During my term, we have completed the Shell Beach streetscape with a bike/pedestrian path and attractive lamps, signage and artwork. I support extending the bike/pedestrian path north to connect with the Bob Jones Trail. We also finished the downtown with a new pier, new pier plaza and other attractive features. Now we are beautifying James Way with trees and landscaping. We replaced playground equipment in Dinosaur Caves, Spyglass, Palisades and Chumash parks.
  • An attractive, well maintained city along with being fiscally prudent. We just finished repaving one third of all the streets in the city and we need to complete the job. We addressed some bluff erosion problems with new stairs at three locations to provide access to the beach. Our budget is balanced and we have significant reserves.
I am passionate about keeping us safe. Besides my work on several governmental boards and commissions, I serve as Vice President of our Fire Safe Council. We have about $25 million in grant funding and we have completed numerous vegetation management projects throughout the County. If re-elected, I want to move forward with a program to educate the public about “hardening” their homes to make them more resistant to fire and perhaps improve their fire insurance prospects.
Building trust is the most important attribute for an elected official To build that trust, one must be open and transparent with their residents and keep their word.
I worked at a research center during my high school summer vacation and got to help my supervisor perform some studies on trees. It lasted three months.
I have been endorsed by Cal Fire Firefighters, two former mayors and two former police chiefs of Pismo Beach.
