Summary

Description
English: Built in 1899-1915, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by George R. Mann to serve as the Arkansas State Capitol, replacing the Old State Capitol, which was built in the mid-19th Century. The building is clad in limestone with multiple ionic colonnades at porticoes on the exterior, doric pilasters, polished brass doors that are highly reflective, a dome above a drum surrounded by an ionic colonnade with a lantern that rises to a height of 230 feet (70 meters), one-over-one and casement windows, oxeye windows at the central bays of the third floor of the front facade, a rusticated base, a stone balustrade around the edges of the roof, low domes atop the meeting chambers, and two pillars flanking the steps along the street that lead up to the front entrance. Inside, the building houses chambers for the Arkansas House of Representatives and Arkansas Senate, with a simple rotunda below the dome, and large staircases in the corridors to the north and south of the rotunda, which are situated between arched openings below vaulted skylights. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Today, the building remains the seat of the government of the state of Arkansas.
