Joseph S. Spano was an assistant judge of the superior court in Windham County, Vermont. He was elected on November 2, 2010. His five-year term began on February 1, 2011, but he stepped down in July of 2012 because of health problems.[1][2][3][4]

Military service

Spano is a veteran of both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army. He is a member of the Brattleboro American Legion and life member of the Brattleboro Veterans of Foreign Wars.[5]

Career

From 1989 to 2009, Spano lived in California. While there, he ran an electronics component firm.[3][5]

2010 election

Spano received 38.5 percent of the vote in the primary. He then won (along with Patricia W. Duff) with 30.75% of the vote in the general election for the Vermont Superior Courts on November 2, 2010.[1][6][7]

Approach to the law

Spano was quoted in the Brattleboro Reformer:

I’m a good listener, and I try to be fair about everything. Fair and honest and open-minded. I’m sure I can listen to any case out there with an open mind.[8]

I’m kind of an independent and I listen to both sides ... I just went in as a Democrat because I had to make a choice, but the party thing doesn’t bother me at all.[8]
