Martin E. Smith was a judge for the Broome County Court in New York and a former supervising judge of the criminal term of the 6th Judicial District. He also served as an acting justice of the Broome County Supreme Court. He was first elected to the county court in November of 1990 and was re-elected in 2000 and 2010.[1][2] He retired in December 2015.[3]

Education

Smith received his B.A. from Niagara University in 1967 and his J.D. from the Syracuse University School of Law in 1970.[2]

Career

Smith began his career in 1970 as an assistant Westchester County district attorney. He worked in that position until 1975 and served as deputy chief of the Fraud Bureau from 1972 to 1975. From 1975 to 1977, he worked as a senior assistant district attorney of Broome County. He then worked as a partner with the law firm of Palmer, Hankin, Peyton and Smith from 1977 to 1985 and then with Griffen and Smith from 1985 to 1990. In 1991, he joined the Broome County Court. He also taught criminal law as an adjunct professor at Binghamton University from 1977 to 1988.[1][2]
