Four seats on the Nashua School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 5, 2013.

Incumbents David Murotake, Dennis Ryder, Thomas Vaughan and Sandra Ziehm ran against challengers George Farrington and Dotty Oden for the seats.[1][2] Murotake, Ziehm, Farrington and Oden won the four seats. This was the first competitive school board election in several election cycles, since the elections in 2009 and 2011 were both won by candidates who ran unopposed.

Nashua School District is located in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.

Nashua School District is located in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. The county seats are Manchester and Nashua. As of the 2010 Census, the county was home to 402,922 residents.[3] In the 2011-2012 school year, Nashua School District was the second-largest school district in New Hampshire and served 11,973 students.[4]

Demographics

Hillsborough County overperformed compared to the rest of New Hampshire in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 34.6 percent of Hillsborough County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 33.1 percent for New Hampshire as a whole. The median household income for Hillsborough County was $70,591 compared to $64,664 for the state of New Hampshire. The percentage of people below poverty level for Hillsborough County was 7.5 percent while it was 8.0 percent for the state of New Hampshire.[3]

Method of board member selection

The Nashua Board of Education consists of nine members elected at-large to four-year terms. There was no primary election and the general election was held on November 5, 2013. Four seats were up for election in 2013.[1]

Individuals interested in running for the board began obtaining nomination papers on July 8, 2013. The filing deadline to submit nomination papers for the 2013 general election was July 19, 2013.[6]
