Ramón Pagán is a judge for Position 8 of the Oregon Court of Appeals. He assumed office on January 19, 2022. His current term ends on January 1, 2029.
Pagán won re-election for the Position 8 judge of the Oregon Court of Appeals outright in the primary on May 17, 2022, after the general election was canceled.
Pagán was a judge on the 20th Judicial District from 2016 to 2022. He was appointed by Gov. Kate Brown (D) on August 15, 2016, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Rick Knapp.[1] Pagán ran unopposed in the general election on November 8, 2016.
Biography
Prior to joining the court, Pagán worked as a criminal defense attorney. He previously served as a law clerk to Sonia Sotomayor when she was a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit.[1]

Judges of the Oregon Supreme Court, Oregon Court of Appeals and Oregon Circuit Courts are all selected in an identical manner. They are chosen in nonpartisan elections to serve six-year terms, after which they must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving.[2]
The chief judges of the circuit courts are appointed by the chief justice of the state supreme court to serve a two-year term.[2]
Qualifications
To serve on the circuit court, a judge must be:[2]
- a U.S. citizen;
- a state resident for at least three years;
- a resident of his or her circuit for at least one year;
- a state bar member; and
- under the age of 75.
